The Little Fatherland

The town or the village that gave us birth is our little fatherland, whether it lies on an island, on a mountain, or on a plain — inland or by the sea.

Recovering, translating, and freely publishing foundational works of Hellenic political, philosophical, and cultural thought for English-speaking audiences.

The Little Fatherland

The town or the village that gave us birth is our little fatherland, whether it lies on an island, on a mountain, or on a plain — inland or by the sea.

In the village the houses are familiar, and the people are almost like kin. Everyone knows everyone, and the things around them. There is nothing but neighborhoods.

01The problem

Some historically significant works of Hellenic political, philosophical, and cultural thought remain inaccessible to English-speaking audiences.

These works may survive in archives, libraries, historical publications, or digitized collections, yet remain difficult to discover, unavailable in English, or inaccessible to readers without specialized academic resources.

The result is a gap between the intellectual inheritance of Hellenism and the audiences capable of engaging with it.

02Our mission

To recover foundational works of Hellenic political, philosophical, and cultural thought that remain inaccessible to English-speaking audiences, translate them with artificial intelligence, and make them freely accessible to the world.

Our approach

  1. Identify & Recover

Identify historically significant public-domain works that have been overlooked, inadequately digitized, or never translated into English.

  2. Translate with AI

Use artificial intelligence as the primary translation instrument, overcoming the traditional barriers of cost, time, and limited translation capacity. Each complete translation is checked against the original Greek through separately executed, documented AI quality control and is released only by a recorded institutional authorization of the Institute Hellenic Diaspora.

  3. Digitize & Preserve

Prepare searchable digital editions, preserve original-language texts where possible, and document bibliographic and historical information.

  4. Publish Openly

Make completed works freely accessible online as clearly labeled, versioned editions, without subscriptions or paywalls, using downloadable and searchable formats wherever feasible, and improve them through documented corrections.

  5. Build a Diaspora Scholarly Network

Connect diaspora scholars, students, translators, historians, and institutions around the shared work of recovering and transmitting Hellenic intellectual heritage. Human collaboration is welcome at every stage; it is not a condition of publication.

Public-domain commitment

  • The IHD Open Hellenic Library will work exclusively with public-domain source materials.

  • Each source text and any existing translation must undergo appropriate copyright verification before republication.

  • New translations will be released openly. Institute Hellenic Diaspora asserts no exclusive copyright in the AI-generated translation and editorial material, and reuse of that material is unrestricted by IHD. Any human or third-party contributions will be identified separately and keep their own legal status.

  • The project will not reproduce copyrighted modern translations without authorization.

05Long-term vision

To establish a permanent, freely accessible digital library of Hellenic thought, built through the intellectual contributions of the diaspora and available to readers throughout the world.

Built by the diaspora. Open to the world.
